Understanding how the clothes you wear can affect both the environment and your wellbeing
When choosing clothing, most of us naturally think about style, fit and price. But there is another question worth asking:
What is my clothing actually made of - and how does that choice affect both the planet and the way I feel wearing it?
From organic cotton and linen to polyester and nylon, every textile comes with its own advantages, limitations and environmental footprint.
The fabric you choose can also influence breathability, moisture management, temperature regulation and comfort against the skin.
Understanding these differences makes it easier to look beyond a label and choose clothing based on what matters to you.
Natural and Organic Fabrics
Natural fibres originate from plants or animals. Common examples include:
- Cotton
- Linen
- Hemp
- Wool
- Silk
Organic fibres take this idea a step further.
GOTS-certified organic cotton, for example, is grown according to organic agricultural requirements that restrict synthetic pesticides and fertilisers and prohibit genetically modified seeds. GOTS certification also establishes environmental and social criteria for textile processing.
Why it matters
Certification can help turn broad sustainability claims into something more measurable. Rather than simply saying a fabric is "natural" or "organic," look for recognised standards and information about how the material was grown and processed.
Natural fibres such as cotton and linen are often valued for their softness, breathability and moisture absorption, making them particularly comfortable for garments worn close to the skin.
Synthetic Fibres
Synthetic fibres are manufactured from polymers, most commonly derived from fossil-fuel feedstocks.
Common examples include:
- Polyester
- Nylon
- Acrylic
- Elastane
There is a reason these materials have become so widespread. Synthetic fibres can provide excellent durability, elasticity, wrinkle resistance and quick-drying performance, which can make them particularly useful for sportswear and technical garments.
But they behave differently from many natural fibres—both environmentally and against the skin.
Natural doesn't automatically mean better, and synthetic doesn't automatically mean bad.
The more useful question is: Which material is appropriate for this garment, and what trade-offs come with it?
Natural vs Synthetic Fabrics: What About Sustainability?
There is no single environmental metric that tells the whole story.
Natural fibres come from renewable biological sources, while conventional synthetic fibres such as polyester and nylon are typically produced using fossil-fuel-derived raw materials.
Organic farming can reduce reliance on certain synthetic agricultural chemicals and can support practices intended to protect soil health and biodiversity.
Natural fibres may also biodegrade under suitable conditions, although dyes, finishes, fibre blends and disposal conditions can significantly affect what happens to a garment at the end of its life.
Synthetic textiles present a different challenge: microfibre pollution.
During washing and normal wear, synthetic textiles can shed microscopic plastic fibres. Some of these fibres can ultimately enter aquatic and terrestrial environments, contributing to persistent microplastic pollution.

The most sustainable garment isn't determined by fibre alone.
How it is grown or manufactured, how often you wear it, how you care for it and how long it lasts all matter.
What About Your Skin?
Sustainability is only part of the conversation. Your clothes spend hours in direct contact with your body, so comfort and skin interaction matter too.
Natural fibres such as cotton and linen can offer good air circulation and moisture absorption, helping move perspiration away from the skin and making them comfortable in warm conditions.
For people who prefer soft fabrics or have sensitive skin, smooth natural fibres such as cotton are often an appealing option because they can provide a soft, breathable layer against the body.
That doesn't mean every natural fibre will suit every person. Wool, for example, can feel irritating to some people, while others find it extremely comfortable.
Sensitive skin? Look beyond the fibre name.
Consider texture, dyes, finishes and other treatments as well as the fibre itself. Individual sensitivities vary, so there is no single material that works best for everyone.
Does Organic Cotton Make a Difference?
Organic cotton is sometimes discussed only in environmental terms, but certification also tells consumers something about how a textile has been produced.
Organic cotton is cultivated according to organic farming requirements rather than conventional systems reliant on certain synthetic agricultural inputs.
When textiles are certified to standards such as GOTS, requirements extend beyond the farm to include restrictions on certain chemicals used during textile processing as well as environmental and social criteria.
This distinction matters.
A garment labelled simply "cotton" tells you what fibre it contains. A recognised certification can provide additional information about the standards applied to its production.
Look beyond "organic" on the label.
Ask whether the material is independently certified, which certification applies, and whether it covers only the raw fibre or additional stages of textile production.
Chemical Finishes: Another Part of the Story
The fibre itself isn't the only material consideration.
Textiles can undergo numerous processes before becoming a finished garment, including dyeing, bleaching, softening and finishing. Some garments may also receive treatments designed to add properties such as wrinkle resistance, stain resistance, water repellency or odour control.
These treatments can be useful and, when compliant with applicable regulations, are not automatically a cause for concern.
For consumers who prefer to minimise unnecessary textile treatments, however, greater transparency around processing and certification can make choosing a garment easier.
This is why knowing the fibre alone isn't always enough. How a fabric is processed matters too.
So, Which Material Should You Choose?
There is no universally perfect fibre.
For a high-performance running top, the moisture-management and quick-drying properties of a synthetic technical fabric may be useful.
For an everyday T-shirt, underwear or another garment worn directly against the skin, you might prioritise softness, breathability and natural fibres.
For something you intend to keep for years, durability and construction quality become particularly important.
The goal isn't to label every fabric as simply "good" or "bad."
It's to understand the trade-offs.
A simple rule when shopping
Ask three questions:
1. What is it made from?
2. How was that material produced and processed?
3. Will I actually wear and care for this garment for a long time?
Transparency Matters
Whether a garment is made from natural or synthetic fibres, consumers should be able to understand what they are buying.
Useful information can include:
- Fibre composition
- Country of origin
- Relevant certifications
- Dyeing and finishing standards
- Manufacturing information
- Care instructions
- Supply-chain transparency
Transparency makes it easier to distinguish meaningful practices from vague environmental marketing claims.
And ultimately, better information enables better choices.
