Understanding what GSM means, why fabric weight matters and whether a higher GSM means better quality
When shopping for a T-shirt, sweatshirt or other everyday essential, you may come across a number followed by GSM.
160 GSM. 180 GSM. 220 GSM.
But what does it actually mean?
GSM stands for grams per square metre. It measures the weight of a fabric over an area of one square metre.
In simple terms, GSM helps tell you how light or substantial a fabric is.
But there is an important distinction:
GSM MEASURES WEIGHT - NOT QUALITY
A higher GSM fabric is not automatically better.
GSM tells you how much the fabric weighs, while quality also depends on the fibres, yarn, fabric construction, finishing and manufacturing.
The right GSM is the one that works for the garment's intended purpose.
What Does GSM Mean in Fabric?
GSM stands for:
Grams per Square Metre
If a fabric is described as 180 GSM, one square metre of that fabric weighs approximately 180 grams.
This provides manufacturers with a standardised way to describe and compare fabric weight.
Generally:
- Lower GSM = lighter fabric
- Higher GSM = heavier fabric
However, GSM does not directly tell you how thick, soft, breathable or durable a fabric will be.
Two fabrics with the same GSM can feel remarkably different depending on how they are made.
Why Does Fabric GSM Matter?
Fabric weight influences many of the characteristics you notice when wearing a garment.
Depending on the material and construction, GSM can affect:
- how substantial a garment feels
- drape
- opacity
- warmth
- breathability
- layering

Consider two cotton T-shirts.
A lightweight T-shirt may feel airy, soft and easy to layer.
A heavyweight T-shirt may feel more structured and substantial.
Neither is automatically superior.

Is Higher GSM Better Quality?

This is one of the most common misconceptions about fabric weight.
A 250 GSM T-shirt is not automatically higher quality than a 160 GSM T-shirt.

Now compare it with a much heavier T-shirt made using poor-quality yarn and inconsistent manufacturing.
The lighter garment can easily be the better product.

GSM vs Fabric Thickness: Are They the Same?
Not exactly.
GSM measures weight per unit of area.
Thickness measures the physical distance between the two surfaces of a fabric.
The two can be related, but they are not interchangeable.
A fabric can have relatively high weight while remaining compact. Another fabric may feel thicker or bulkier because of its yarn or construction without having an exceptionally high GSM.
This becomes especially important when comparing different types of textiles.
A knitted cotton jersey, brushed sweatshirt fabric and woven linen fabric can all behave differently even at similar weights.
So if you want to understand how a garment will feel, GSM should be considered alongside fabric construction.
Does Higher GSM Mean a T-Shirt Will Last Longer?
Not necessarily.
A more substantial fabric may provide greater resistance to certain types of physical wear, but GSM alone cannot predict durability.

Why Do Heavyweight T-Shirts Feel More Premium?
Heavyweight T-shirts are sometimes associated with premium clothing because additional fabric weight can create a particular sensory experience.

- structured
- dense
- less transparent
- more rigid in their drape
That physical substance can create an impression of quality.
But perceived quality and actual quality are not necessarily the same thing.
A premium lightweight T-shirt may intentionally prioritise softness, movement and breathability instead.
The better question is not:
"How heavy is it?"
It is:
"Does this fabric make sense for the product?"

If you want to judge the quality of a T-shirt, GSM is useful, but it should never be the only specification you consider.

THINK BEYOND GSM
When evaluating a garment, consider:
Fibre → Yarn → Fabric → GSM → Finishing → Construction → Fit
GSM is one piece of the quality puzzle—not the whole picture.
GSM and Organic Cotton
Organic cotton can be used to produce fabrics across a wide range of GSM values.
A lightweight organic cotton jersey and a heavyweight organic cotton jersey can both be high-quality textiles.
The term organic describes how the agricultural fibre was produced according to the applicable certification standard.
GSM describes fabric weight.
And neither term, by itself, tells you everything about the quality of the finished garment.
This distinction is important when comparing products.
A claim such as "240 GSM organic cotton" provides two useful pieces of information—but you still need to consider the yarn, construction, finishing and manufacturing.
GSM and Cost Per Wear
A heavier garment does not automatically have a lower Cost Per Wear.
Cost Per Wear depends on how much you paid and how often you actually wear the product.
For example:
A €50 heavyweight T-shirt worn 20 times:
€50 ÷ 20 = €2.50 per wear
A €40 lightweight T-shirt worn 100 times:
€40 ÷ 100 = €0.40 per wear
The best value therefore isn't necessarily the garment containing the most fabric.
It is often the garment that combines quality, durability, versatility and frequent use.
How to Choose the Right Fabric GSM
Instead of searching for the highest number, think about what you want from the garment.
Choose a lighter GSM if you want:
- a lighter feel
- easier layering
- greater fluidity
- clothing suited to warmer conditions
Choose a medium GSM if you want:
- everyday versatility
- a balance between lightness and structure
- a year-round basic
Choose a higher GSM if you want:
- a more substantial feel
- greater structure
- heavier drape
- a denser garment
These are general characteristics, and the final result will always depend on the textile itself.
THERE IS NO "BEST" GSM
There is only a more appropriate GSM for a particular product and purpose.
A great summer T-shirt and a great winter sweatshirt shouldn't necessarily use the same fabric weight.
How Can You Tell the GSM of Clothing?
Sometimes brands provide GSM directly on product pages or technical specifications.
Often, however, they do not.
You cannot reliably determine the exact GSM simply by touching a finished garment.
You may be able to tell whether a fabric feels relatively light or substantial, but exact GSM requires measurement.
For consumers, the number is most useful when brands provide it alongside other meaningful information about the fabric.
Transparency matters more than using a large number as a marketing claim.
